Using a dimmer to dim a filament or halogen bulb by 5% of its voltage will more than double the life of the lamp. This is a handy trick when dealing with bulbs in hard to reach places.

5/5/10 - Fluorescent Conversion
If you multiply fluorescent wattages by 5x, it will roughly give you the equivalant light output as an incandescent lamp.
eg. a 20 watt fluorescent lamp gives roughly the same light output as 100w incadescent bulb.

As of 2009 any halogen downlight that has any insulation or timber beam within 200mm of it requires to be installed with a "Heat Can" to stop any foreign matter coming in contact with the back of the globe and starting a fire.
